To research or not to research? Minor problems in sentence structure and grammar. Easily identifiable, plausible, novel, sophisticated, insightful, crystal clear. Asking your students to undertake a research paper as part of the art history survey can be a tricky beast as the range of student experience with elements such as library research and bibliographic citations can be large and crippling.
A rubric is a scoring tool that explicitly represents the performance expectations for an assignment or piece of work.
Examples support some points. Sentence structure and grammar strong despite occasional lapses; punctuation and citation style often used correctly. For most mixed-ability or required-credit survey classes, focusing on short papers with limited research allows you and the students to focus on finessing writing skills first.
Rubrics can be used for a wide array of assignments: There are ethical considerations to using anti-plagiarism software. Correct word usage, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar; correct citation of sources; minimal to no spelling errors; absolutely no run-on sentences or comma splices.
May not address counter-arguments or make any connections with the thesis. May have a few unclear transitions, or a few paragraphs without strong topic sentences.

Discussion Class This rubric assesses the quality of student contributions to class discussions. May have several two to five run-on sentences, sentence fragments, and comma splices.
